n8n practice exercises: 38 broken workflows you fix

Reading the docs tells you what a node does. It does not tell you where the If node goes in this workflow — and that reflex is the thing clients pay for. NodeQuest is 38 short exercises, each one a broken n8n automation you repair by wiring nodes until it runs.

Why practice, and not another tutorial

Watching someone connect nodes is passive: you recognise the answer when you see it, which feels like knowing it. Fixing a workflow that does not run is active: you get an error, you form a hypothesis, you test it. That is the same loop a real client job runs on, so the skill transfers.

Every exercise here is deliberately broken in one place. One wrong connection, one missing filter, one node in the wrong order. Find it, fix it, run it, pass.

What you actually practise

Solved levels export as real n8n JSON

This is the part that makes it practice rather than a game: when a level runs, you can export that workflow as n8n JSON and import it into your own instance. So the 38 exercises double as 38 working reference workflows you can open, read and reuse — not screenshots of someone else's screen.

Free vs paid

Free: the first 4 levels, no signup. Enough to find out whether the format works for you.

$9.99 once: all 38 levels, sandbox mode, and JSON export of every solved workflow. No subscription, no account required to start.

For people who teach automation

If you make n8n content, this is a playable break between tutorials or a "can you solve this level?" segment your audience can act on immediately. There is a 40% affiliate program ($4.00 per $9.99 sale, 365-day cookie, NET30 via Lemon Squeezy) — details and ready-to-post copy here.

Questions

Do I need to install n8n first? No. The game runs in the browser; you export JSON when you want to move a solution into a real instance.

Is this a course? No video, no chapters. It is a set of exercises with hints — you solve them in the order you want.

Is it for complete beginners? The first levels assume you have seen the n8n canvas once. If you have never opened it, do n8n's own intro first, then come here for the practice.

Does it work on a tablet? Yes, it runs in any modern browser, including mobile.
